In many pre-industrial cultures, animism was the original form of Paganism. During the middle ages, many people were persecuted for their non-Christian beliefs, which led to the so-called Burning Times. Following the repeal of England's anti-witchcraft laws in the 1950s, Gerald Gardner introduced Wicca to the world. His work brought Wicca to the public, as did works by authors such as Margot Adler, Ray Buckland, Phyllis Curott, Scott Cunningham, Janet and Stewart Farrar, Sybil Leek, Charles Leland, Margaret Murray, and Doreen Valiente.
